Pope John-Paul said once: "The greatest battle in this century is the battle of the mind." Perhaps this perennial truth should be applied to us in all times.

As our experiences show us, unless we think right, we simply cannot pray right, live right, do right and be right. Everything seems to begin with thinking right in life. This is where the awesome importance of mediation comes in. It helps us to think right, so that we can pray right, live right, do right and be right accordingly. One may use the Bible, teachings of the Church, writings of the Saints, holy books, tapes and videos, etc., to assist us in our mediation.

Above all, we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, nothing can be right. Let us seek constantly then the Holy Spirit and His grace. One way to do so is to pray this wonderful prayer of Cardinal Mercier regularly: "O Holy Spirit, Soul of my soul, I adore You. Enlighten, guide, strengthen and console me. Tell me what I ought to do and command me to do it. I promise to be submissive in everything that You permit to happen to me, only show me what is Your will."
